While researching ways to kill the pesky weeds in our grass, I stumbled across a brilliant idea that was less expensive than buying a 10 lb bag of weed killer at the store. Dish Soap. Did you know one of the uses of soap is to help kill weeds? I didn’t. Mixing 1 tablespoon of dish soap, 1 cup of salt, and 1 gallon of vinegar is how you make the magical potion.
I headed to Walmart last weekend to pick up the supplies and set out on my journey to kill some weeds. There are great soap ideas on Walmart’s website. Palmolive Soap is not only tough on grease soft on hands, it is also tough on WEEDS soft on the environment. The measurements for the weed killing concoction seemed a little extreme – a whole gallon of vinegar to treat my small backyard?! I think not… I mixed 2 cups vinegar, 1/2 salt, and 1 tablespoon of dish soap. I mixed up the concoction in a spray bottle (also found at Walmart) and headed outside to tackle some pesky weeds.
The most annoying weeds in our lawn live by the cement patio. We hate using weed killer from the store because Annabelle likes to play in the grass, and I always worry she might end up eating something that has been contaminated. The soap, vinegar, and salt is harmless to her. I sprayed the heck out of those weeds… and also a few ant hills.
I sprayed the area 3 times last week, and then when my husband went out to pull some of the longer weeds, he noticed that the ones I sprayed were DRIED OUT and dying! I am guessing the spray killed the entire weed down to the root?! Hip hip hooray! Goodbye weeds! Note: I have also used the concoction in the spray bottle to clean off our patio table. The combination of vinegar. salt, and dish soap cut right through the muck that had built up on our glass table top. My next task is going to be to spray this stuff on my glass shower door… I’ll let you know how that turns out.
Palmolive Dish Soap can be used for so many different things. From cleaning your dirty dishes, to making big bubbles for your kids, it seems like the uses for soap are endless.
