The day after a long holiday weekend is always depressing – no more daytime Rose and no more overindulging. As a result of my Fourth of July escapades, my fingers and toes are swollen, my pants feel a bit tighter, and my face looks puffy this morning. Even though I have a fast metabolism (breastfeeding keeps my peanut butter/fluff addiction off my backside), I still feel gross when I don’t eat healthy.
So what is a girl to do? DETOX. The best way to get rid of a holiday hangover is get rid of the gunk in my body. I never do anything crazy – just follow these 5 little steps for a few days and I feel better in no time.
Step 1 – Water
Water water everywhere. I drink SO much water on a daily basis, but if I’m trying to detox my body of too much sugar (in the form of Sav Blanc) I drink twice as much. Sometimes I add in a few lemons, cucumber, or even strawberries.
Step 2 – Move
Before I had children, I was a workout fanatic. I went to the gym, or a workout class, every day of the week. As a SAHM, I don’t have the time or a babysitter to get anywhere but out in the neighborhood with the girls. Or we have a dance party. I will try anything to sweat a little.
Step 3 – Vitamins
Don’t forget to take your vitamins! I always do when I have a lot going on…
Step 4 – Eat Clean!
During a detox, I try to steer clear of my beloved BBQ potato chips and strawberry poptarts (yes I really do eat that crap). I choose fresh foods and anything unprocessed. Unfortunately, a lot of vegetables bother my belly, so I have a limited number of things I can actually eat. Tonight I’m making a grilled summer detox salad and a bunch of grilled chicken to nibble on this week.
Step 5 – Sleep
I never get enough sleep when my family and friends are in town – and sleep is when our body rests. Not only do I feel gross when I’m purposely staying up too late (I’m used to not sleeping with the baby), but my normal anxiety is intensified. Get yourself back on a sleep schedule as soon as possible.
