Staying home with my daughters and being a blogger isn’t the glamorous life some people think I must lead. There are days when I feel pulled from both ends and extremely guilty for letting down my daughters when work takes priority. I manage to do both – run Confessions of a Northern Belle and raise two girls who are pretty amazing – with both daily wins and losses. If you’re a new stay at home Mom blogger, or a seasoned SAHMB, here are a list of tips to help you stay on track and become more successful.
one. make time for your kids.
There is absolutely no way that you can write a Mommy blog if you don’t spend time with your children. Not only will they provide most of the inspiration behind your content, but if you ignore your kids, then you’re not doing your job of staying home to watch them.
If you have a child that likes to play independently (like my Annabelle), you should still make a point to play with her. In my house, we have dance parties, tea parties, and like to draw pictures together. I take a lot of photos of my children for my blog, and they enjoy being in front of the camera, so this is also time we spend together. If you’re trying to do both – stay at home and write a blog – make sure you’re capable of doing each well.
two. make time for your blog.
There is absolutely no way you can write a Mommy blog if you don’t spend time working on your blog. I find that my most read posts are the ones that I have put my heart into, proofreading each word and inserting high quality relevant images. Don’t waste your readers time with blog posts that have spelling mistakes, run-on sentences, or lack focus. The reason your readers will continue to come back time and time again is if you have consistent work they enjoy reading.
If you want to have a successful blog, dedicate time each day to write good content, engage with your readers and other bloggers, and update social media. You don’t have to post every day, but when you do publish a post, make sure it is something you are proud of.
three. make lists and use a planner.
There is a lot of work that goes into running a successful blog, but if you are not organized, you will find that your blog reflects the chaos. Staying at home with children means there are playdates and appointments, as well as activities I have to coordinate. I use my planner to keep track of all of the important dates for not only my children, but my blog as well. There is nothing more embarrassing than missing a deadline for a blog post because I didn’t write down the due date. I use the reminder alarms in my phone for appointments and deadlines.
List making is an essential part of life as a SAHM Blogger. I make grocery lists, to do lists, post idea lists, and so much more. I have an entire notebook dedicated for lists and feel so much satisfaction when I can cross something off of my list.
four. master the art of multi-tasking.
My daughters are old enough to play together now, so I usually go to my macbook or phone when they’re occupied. However, there are times when I have to multi-task at motherhood and blogging. Meal time in my home is when I can do both – as long as there is food in front of my daughters, I can stand at the kitchen counter and reply to emails.
The fact of the matter is that you CAN be a stay at home mom AND a blogger… it just takes time, dedication, and focus. PLUS, you need some passion behind what you’re doing. If you love you’re job, then you’ll succeed no matter what!
